Dear Parents / Carers,
It has come to my attention that there has been a recent update to the Social Media App, Snapchat, which needs your urgent action.
As some of you may know, in this update, users openly share their current location on the ‘SnapMap’ to other users. It is essential that all users turn on ‘Ghost Mode’ which hides location details.
Please discuss this with your children and follow the steps below with them to ensure that this setting is activated:
1. Pinch the screen when in ‘selfie mode’, this should bring up the ‘SnapMap’.
2. Click the settings icon in the top right-hand corner.
3. Set the account to ‘Ghost Mode’- this will stop Snapchat from sharing the phone’s location.
At Oriel Academy, we are aware that children are using a range of Social Media accounts. Our view is that a constant dialogue between teachers, parents and children is the best way to ensure that children remain safe online. The NSPCC’s guidance on Snapchat and other Social Media platforms can be found on where it suggests a minimum age of 13.
We take any e-safety concerns very seriously, if you have any questions or difficulties in activating this setting, please do not hesitate to email me or speak to me us in person.
Thank you for your continued support,
